Keeping Caitlyn Clothed

One day last week, Caitlyn picked out an outfit for school but then changed her skirt choice by the time she was ready to have Mama do her hair for the day. When I asked her why the change, she told me that when she had put on the original skirt and made sure the waistband wasn’t below her hips, she realized the skirt was too short. At this rate, we’re not going to make it until April 23-30 for Elsie Marley’s Kids Clothes Week Challenge. I’ve already dropped all the hems I can drop. If it’s too short now, …

Further experiments in knits

Remember this top? The one I made in a knits class with unshrunk fabric? I sent it off to my sister (who reports that it works fine for her) and I’ve finally got around to trying again. Ta-da! I pre-washed the fabric this time and happily the finished shirt still has lovely long sleeves. I’m not 100% sure I’ve got the fit right, but at least this one is wearable. The armscye might not be totally right and there might be too much fabric in the back. It’s hard to tell when I’m twisting around in front of a mirror …

Two Garden Days

Last Friday, the sun came out. It’s probably only a temporary thing. We usually get a patch of sunny, warm(ish) weather in February before returning to rain and gray for months. As one of the other mothers at the bus stop said, “I forget it’s only February and, well, March, April and May will just suck.” But while it lasts, it’s glorious. Caitlyn, of course, thinks this means that the groundhog didn’t see his shadow on Thursday and spring and summer will be arriving early. (I haven’t gotten around to telling her he did.) She’d be happiest if we could …

Nothing Goes According to Plan

I was going to post more frequently this week. I was going to finish a project and start at least one other. And then this happened: Caitlyn got her wish. It has, however unlikely, snowed significantly on Seattle. Given that snow like this is unusual, everything around here shuts down. The train runs, but school is closed, and so are lots of businesses. It’s oddly felt like a Saturday, over and over again, every day this week. It’s still coming down now, although it’s shifted back to snow after a stint of sleet/freezing rain that’s left a sheath of ice …

One last gift post

I know everyone has moved on to new projects (new year, new goals, new determination!), but I’m still wrapping up/catching up. I’ve got one last gift post and then I can move on to the Things I Didn’t Do Because I Was Making Caramels post(s). By that time that’s done, perhaps I’ll have a post for Something New Made in January. Maybe. Anyway, now that we’ve had our last holiday gift exchange, I can share this: Because you can’t give caramels to kids who don’t have teeth yet. I’d love to say that I came up with the idea for this …

Christmas Eve Snow

When we finally got around to marking the winter solstice last month, Caitlyn greeted it with the largest pout imaginable. “No snow!” I suppose she’s got it in her head that it snows regularly in Seattle because we’ve had snow for three years running, at least. We had snow in 2010, lots in 2009, and more in 2008. That’s three years in which enough snow for local sledding has come to Seattle at least once. Of course, there’s still the rest of January and February before the possibility of local snow gets so slim as to be essentially zero. So, …
