Little Red Dress

I thought I’d kept my KCW list to something reasonable. A dress, a pair of shorts and some iron-on transfers on some t-shirts. Not a long list, especially when you compare it to other lists from other years. I totally should have finished last week. Perhaps I should stop mentally signing myself up for things that have a fixed timeframe. I’m starting to think I’m just tempting fate when I announce that I’m going to do something within a set time line. Work gets busy with crises; I throw my neck out of alignment; the sun comes out and suddenly …

Appropriate Scaling

It’s Kids’ Clothing Week! KCW has become a seasonal, four times per year event now, complete with it’s own blog, Instagram, Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest. If you’ve got kids to sew for, this is a great nudge to get you going, and it comes with a whole community of people to cheer you on. Unlike every other year so far, I’m trying to keep my KCW goals to something reasonable and achievable. Also, Caitlyn’s doing pretty well for clothes right now, so there’s not a lot of dire needs at the moment. So, I’m making a dress, a pair …

A Tale of Two Shirts

Part way through KCWC last week, I had a sudden insight: Right now, Caitlyn doesn’t actually need any new dresses or skirts. She’ll disagree with this assessment, of course. But I folded up those two floral prints and put them away for future sewing and focused on the knits. And the serger. First up, Figgy’s Tee for Two in the leftover teal floral. Kid-sized clothes sometimes look weird on full-size hangers. I made the sleeves as long as I could with the fabric I had, thus the three-quarters-ness of them, but otherwise, I think this came together pretty well for …

If only I was this excited at 8am

These photos were taken this morning, before the school bus came. I don’t know that I can remember ever being this excited about anything before, oh, say, noon. Maybe if I had a new top and – surprise! – got to wear it unexpectedly? Possibly, if I was wearing said new top at a reasonable hour. School buses do not come at a reasonable hour. Where was I? So, this is my first KCWC finish for the week. It came out well enough and Caitlyn seems to love it, but I’m not super thrilled. I don’t think it’s the pattern …

KCWC Fall 2012

It’s that time again, when elsie marley hosts the Kids Clothing Week Challenge. Commit to sewing clothes for your kid (or any other kid in your life, I expect) for a minimum of one hour a day for a week. Therefore, it’s also that time when, unlike any other time of the year, I over-commit and over-extend, planning to accomplish way more than I should reasonably expect of myself. I know this, and I still do it. I’m less organized than last time, when I had a bunch of things cut out by the time KCWC got started. This time, …

Simple Daffodil Dress

And here’s the last of my completed KCWC things. This is McCalls 6387. I picked up the fabric on a whim while at Stash, and while I love the print, I think it’s too small for this dress. It’s got these sweet little daffodils on it and you totally can’t tell for all the gathers. It’s cute and simple… and a bit too big. I held the pattern pieces up to Caitlyn several times but there’s almost two inches of extra space in the width of the finished bodice. Check out how much fabric is bunched up there between her …
