Pie Night!

Chicken Pot Pie. Shepherd’s Pie. An underspiced but worth improving tomato-zucchini pie. Followed by Peach Pie Pops (they look like lollipops, but they are tiny, personal pies on sticks!), Lemon Meringue Pie, Peach Pie, a triple layer lemon/peach-pear/cream pie, and a Butterscotch Pie. Oh, and ice cream. No, I didn’t make all of that. Just four of them. Which was two more than I originally planned. Because sometimes Pie Happens. I’d post pictures, but we’ve eaten it already. Yes, we had help. And yes, there are leftovers. But they aren’t so pretty any more. Thanks to all the Pie Night …

We received some yummy homemade granola for Christmas (thanks to the Portland aunties!), and at Caitlyn’s request I rounded up the ingredients to reproduce it on our own. I scooped and Caitlyn poured and stirred. I think she had a good time helping, although she didn’t sound so enthusiastic when I asked if she’d want to do it again, something that I think has more to do with the granola-making taking the whole morning and using up her intended Lego time than with the actual granola-making itself. The report from breakfast today, though, was that she ate it enthusiastically. And …

Kitchen Magic

And I like to eat things with recognizable ingredients. I like to assemble things. There’s something appealing to a pile of parts and some instructions, and something satisfying about getting a useful or beautiful thing out of the raw pieces. Quilt kits, LEGO sets, …

A day in the kitchen

I read email this morning, and then ignored the computer for the rest of the day. As a result, I’m down to my last bottle of corn syrup and I’m out of almonds. I hand-chopped 6 cups of almonds today, and now, finally, I understand What a Food Processor Is For, although I don’t think I’ll buy one – I don’t know where I’d put it. I’ve bundled up the results of today’s work already, before taking any pictures, so you’ll have to imagine: English Toffee Peanut Brittle (and black beans and roasted squash, but those aren’t quite the same) …

This may be the most beautiful pie I’ve ever made: It had absolutely no structural integrity once we started cutting it, oozing peach parts and the crust sticking to the dish. But it was yummy, and really, that’s all we care about, right? Save
