Tango with the White Cat

Back at the beginning of June (yesterday, right?) Caitlyn’s participated in Spectrum‘s All-School Demonstration performance. Her Ballet 1 class danced to tango music. All the other pictures have other kids in them, so you’ll have to enjoy just this one. Sadly you can’t see the sequins all over the front of her leotard, the detail she loved best about the performance. After her class, in the weeks leading up to the performance, this was the detail she’d talk about the most: the sparkly red leotards, the shiny red satin shirt for the one boy in the class, the red flower …

How is it the End of May?

Sure, I know I’ve been busy, but gee whiz already, surely Father Time could slow down a little bit? Well after KCW wrapped up, I finished this pair of shorts for Caitlyn. I used up some stashed denim of unknown vintage and a fat quarter in red, so it’s definitely stashbusting even if I’m not on theme for May. I used the pants portion of McCall’s 6389, changing the waistband, shortening them up and adding the cuff detail. No pockets, though, which I might regret if Caitlyn keeps collecting rocks when she wears these. Guess who gets to carry the …

Snowshoeing

For the first winter in three years, it hasn’t snowed in Seattle. Caitlyn takes this as a personal offense. We’ve been meaning to try snowshoeing for years. Somehow planning the outing has never bubbled to the top of the list. So, thanks are in order to Eldan for providing a sufficient nudge and to Melinda for joining us! (Maybe next time, we’ll get both of you!) It was quite a bit easier than I thought it would be. Sure, we wore ourselves out, but no one got tangled up in her snowshoes unless she meant to. This being March in …

Amuse your Child and Irritate your Cat in 4 Easy Steps

1. Bring your child and your cat together in the same location. This is easy to do if there’s food available, or even just the vague promise that there might be food for at least one of them. 2. Let the child pick up a shiny object. Today, Caitlyn chose a can opener. Let the child do random things with said shiny object. For example, open and close the can opener in a sideways position. Experiment with putting can opener handles on either side of a can or jar. 3. Let the cat choose a position on the other side …

Collaborations

We recently had some gift-giving occasions come up. I nudged Caitlyn a bit (“I bet Grandma would really like it if you made a little something for her…”), and then she surprised me with a request to borrow the fabric markers. We talked it back and forth a bit (“It would be weird to draw on a piece of fabric and then not turn it into something…”) before she settled on potholders/mug rugs. The results are almost all Caitlyn. She pressed the fabric; I cut the squares and marked seam allowances. She came up with and drew the designs. She …
