Too Many Variables Can Spoil the Soup

Back in June, Stash featured some lovely large scale dahlia fabric. I thought the fabric might make a fun version of Amy Butler’s Liverpool. I like to think I was mostly right. I made the tunic length (the pattern can work up as a shirt, a tunic, a short dress or a long dress), lengthening it 3/4 inch to put the waist at the right spot for me. I didn’t make any other adjustments. The pattern is well written, with detailed descriptions of each step. I’m a bit of a novice when it comes to shaping garments even though I’m …

Assorted Finished Objects

While I may not have been here much, don’t think I’ve not been busy in the making department. Here’s a mini parade of things I’ve finished (mostly) recently. I could drag this out with a post for each item, but at the rate I’m going, it’d be October and I’d still be writing posts for things I did in May. I had some leftover yarn (“waterfall” Homespun from Lion) from a previous project. I found this mesh scarf pattern via Ravelry and thought, well there’s a way to use up some leftovers and get something reasonably sized out of it. …

My New Tiramisu

We finally had a day where all the variables lined up: decent light, not too cold to be outside in short sleeves, Ian available to take the photos. Here’s my very own Cake Patterns’ Tiramisu, the first completed real installment in my personal Wardrobe Improvement Project! I started this dress during StephC‘s Tiramisu Sewalong, but didn’t manage to finish with everyone else. The 30 minutes a day format of the sewalong didn’t quite work for me (although it’s possible I could have adjusted things to make it work) and I spent so much time trying to get the fit just …

Sew Grateful and a Giveaway

It’s Sew Grateful Week! That means it was just about a year ago that I started looking around the internet for folks who sewed clothes for themselves. Not to knock the quilters I follow or those who sew kids’ fashion, it’s just that I want to also sew for me. I may not comment much, but I’m a regular lurker around My Happy Sewing Place, Four Square Walls, Cation Designs, Ginger Makes, and several other sites. I may be moving slowly on my own Wardrobe Improvement Project, but I’m pretty sure any forward progress at all is at least in …

Showtime

The official Tiramisu sewalong is all done. And after three muslins for the the bodice, I’m saying it’s time to do this thing for real. Not that I’m totally confident that I’ve got the fit “just right”. But I’m not sure I’m being realistic any more. The last time I had the latest muslin on, I noticed some wrinkling around the armscye area. Has it always been there? Is it supposed to do that? I might be starting to nit-pick, looking for flaws to adjust where there aren’t any. Besides, my muslin fabric is a bit different from the fabric …

Over-Estimation and Frustration

After at least 3 hours yesterday working on my Tiramisu, I have nothing to show. I suppose I could post a photo of my abandoned muslins, but you can imagine a small pile of green fabric topped with some pieces of white-and-red stripe, both with lots of loose threads, right? It’ll have to do, since I don’t have the guts to post pictures of myself in ill-fitting muslins. Man, this has been frustrating. I’ve long thought of myself as a fairly solid intermediate when it comes to sewing. I’ve now come to the realization that drawstring bags, phone cozies, tangle …
